What is Succession Planning?
Succession planning is a
structured approach to identifying existing talent within a
business, and aligning it to specific business objectives. Often
succession planning focuses on high level roles but it can equally
apply to any position.
It identifies one or more people where specific
developmental activities are undertaken to enable previously
identified key career moves to occur. The programme can include
developmental sideways moves in order to provide appropriate
experience to progress upwards within the organisation.
Development activities are not necessarily
structured around specialist roles but are often based around
generic skill sets that are required across different job functions
and roles.
In essence it’s giving high potential employees the skills, not only
to do their own roles but a range of roles in the future.
Why use Succession Planning?
In today’s market place, competition for key personnel is on the
increase, as skill shortages start to bite. Organisations are
increasingly looking inwardly to identify those personnel who have
the potential to be either short or long term successors for key
roles.
Succession planning helps to identify potential managers or leaders
to fill key positions within an organisation in the future, by
aligning talent in a planned way.
